Pilot Scheme for Ground Water Remediation in North Kuwait

Kuwait's only freshwater aquifers (Raudhatain and Umm Al-Aish) were contaminated as a result of the damage and detonation of oil wells during the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. Following review of Claims submitted by the State of Kuwait, the United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC) awarded funding to Kuwait for the remediation of the aquifers.
Kuwait National Focal Point (KNFP) is the Kuwait governmental entity responsible for overseeing the implementation of UNCC funded remediation activities.
On behalf of Kuwait NFP, the Ministry of Electricity and Water MEW will be issuing Request for Proposal (RFP) to solicit Bidders' proposals for implementing the field work of the pilot scale assessment of:
    ·    Remediation  of groundwater using 'Pump — Treat — Reinjection' technology
    ·    'In-situ Remediation' of groundwater
    ·    The proposed treatment will be comprised of air stripping, metal precipitation, coagulation/flocculation, sedimentation through a clarifier system, media filtration, and carbon adsorption for effective hydrocarbon removal, but not salt removal. For salt removal, an RO plant is proposed as the last step

Before embarking on the actual remediation of contaminated groundwater, pilot scale assessment of three different remediation alternatives will be assessed in the field as follows:

        the effec
    he aquifer formation in the pilot areas.

The aim of these pilot studies is to select an optimum strategy for the remediation of contaminated groundwater to drinking water level using either one of the above or some combination of the above methods.

The duration of this pilot scheme project is 2 years.
